Dog-time!
Since the last post, Hershey has had some remarkable adventures!
First off, the guys came over for a M&M session and Hershey did very well with all three of them. She took some cookies and was fast to calm down - we've noticed this, and are really encouraged by it. Then, Jessica, my bridesmaid-to-be came to visit from Calgary. Hershey has never met Jess before, so it was a good test of how she might be over the holidays. They got along okay, no huge breakthroughs but things went well over the weekend. Hershey got the first of her X-mas gifts too - a box of Meaty Bones from Scooter & Trinity!
Shortly after, in early December, we went to Ontario for our holidays. Hershey was put into cargo again, and it was tough. First off, the Edmonton Airport people were quite nervous of her - which I can understand, but said things like "we'll have to put this big viscious dog through these doors to go to security..." which was unnecessary. Also, there was another lady who was checking in at the same time and she had a big standard poodle which she was walking all over the place on leash - poor Hershey was jealous and didn't understand why she was trapped when another dog was allowed to walk around!
I think the flight itself was fairly okay for Hershey - there were no disasters like last time, so we were much more confident in her safe keeping. In fact, when we got her in Toronto, she hadn't peed or pooped or anything! Wonderdog!
Toronto was great fun for Hershey - she got wrestling with Tess right away and remembered Chris' parents too. She warmed up to Melissa, Chris' sister, much better than she had last year, which was good. The only trying thing for Hershey was being stuck in her crate in the cold room during a party - she destroyed her blanket again, but that was the only rough thing. She got to come to the Christmas Tree Farm and enjoyed some walks with Tess too. It was nice to be able to leave her for the day and be cared for by Chris' parents while we enjoyed our vacation time.
For Christmas #1, Hershey got lots of presents: 2 boxes of cookies, 1 box of "doggie brownie mix", a yellow tough-fabric man, and a big brown bear from Chris, and a stuffed chicken toy from me.
At Christmas #2 (in Ottawa on Boxing day) Hershey got even more stuff: a new food mat, stuffed sport ball toys with ropes through them, a strange looking Christmas cat thing with rope, a tennis ball on rope, a rawhide chew, a new brush, a weasel ball (from me) and maybe more (can't remember - she was really spoilled!) She was able to open most of her gifts on her own, which was very cute!
We transfered from Toronto to Ottawa on boxing day - she enjoyed the drive quite a bit, getting lots of scratches and enjoying the water we got for her (we planed ahead this time!). She didn't enjoy the pit stop at the Flying J in Napanee very much; mostly because she didn't like the other folks filling up at the gas station all around the car.
Ottawa went fantastically this year! Last year, Hershey was stuck on a leash the whole time, but this year she was able to get lots of love (and treats!) from my parents, and even my brother! Things went wonderfully - she was able to poop in the backyard (despite a scary run across the semi-frozen pool) and had a great time looking at the squirrels in the backyard through the big picture windows. She did feel self-conscious though and was super submissive (read: peed) when my dad would come home from work. But overall, she got lots of scratches and was 100% comfortable with my family, which is great!
We enjoyed several nice walks with Hershey (my mom and dad each got to take the leash during the walks), and Hershey got to enjoy a big piece of Christmas turkey! She also enjoyed something kind of strange: hiding under the daybed! We've never seen her do anything like that before.
The trip back to Toronto was good and easy for her - Flying J was less stressful the second time around. When Chris' parents returned from their cruise at 3 in the morning, we told them that Hershey remembered the house and actually jumped out of the barely-parked van to get in the house! After another day or so of being in Toronto, it was time to leave for Edmonton. Hershey was pretty good on the plane this time too and was happy to be home.
A day ago - we went to pick up the Tanner's dogs from their place to dogsit for a week. Things have been going well with the three dogs - but it is tiring. Chris is going to stay home with them for a few days - it should be very educational for Hershey to see what life is like with other dogs around!
